Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a scientific, rational and evidence-based medical system that effectively treats a wide range of common health concerns. Historically, it is part of a 3000 year old Traditional Chinese medical system. Over these three millenia, Chinese doctors meticulously documented pathways in the body, called meridians, mapping how “energy” flows through you, how it gets disrupted causing symptoms and how it can be re-regulated through the use of acupuncture on specific points. Today, it is interwoven into the sophisticated health care system of modern China. According to the National Institute of Health in 2020, “Acupuncture and Oriental medicine are widespread and practiced in more than 183 countries and regions. As such, it plays an important role in the world health care system.” In short, acupuncture safely and effectively treats a wide range of common health conditions.

Because the use of acupuncture has grown in the West, there is a lot of interest in studying how and why acupuncture effectively treats many common health conditions beyond the traditional Chinese medicine explanation that it “moves and balances chi.” In the most general TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) explanation, symptoms and conditions arise from imbalances of “chi.” Contemporary research is adding to our traditional understanding of “chi” which is what modern medicine calls nerve transmission, connective tissue planes, metabolic components in blood such as oxygen, hormones, neurotransmitters and nutrients. Acupuncture has demonstrated the ability to regulate and improve the overall functioning of your body though the exact mechanisms are still being explored.

As a FL licensed Acupuncture Physician (AP4164) with over 3000 hours of training and 14+ years of clinical experience, I find it very exciting to be a part of this process. What motivates me is that the clients I treat report to me in the clinic how acupuncture improves their common health conditions such as chronic lower back pain, restores the quality of their sleep, reduces the frequency of migraines, eases their anxiety and resolves their digestive disturbance.

Acupuncture, Chinese herbs and Traditional Chinese Medicine do have their limitations, which is why integrating these methods with Western Allopathic Medicine can create an ideal medical system. In modern day China, acupuncture, herbs and Western medicine are well integrated into one system. Part of my job is to help you connect with other practitioners as well as Western Allopathic Doctors when appropriate. We can work together to create a comprehensive medical experience one individual at a time, starting with you.

Your acupuncture session may include other,
very helpful tools to maximize the effects of each treatment.

Electro

Electro acupuncture helps release tension, restore muscles back to their natural resting length, creates an analgesic effect to reduce pain and can extend the therapeutic effects of an acupuncture treatment.

Cupping

Cupping releases facia to free up muscles and pulls circulation through stagnant areas to reduce pain and increase function.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha uses a smooth edged massage tool and a little oil to gently scrape the tissues of a tight or inflamed area to increase blood and lymph circulation, promote healing and restore function.

Moxa

Moxa is a form of heat therapy used to warm and move Qi in a stagnant area and through an acupuncture channel to optimize the body’s natural ability to self correct.

Acupuncture FAQs

Acupuncture can be an extremely powerful low risk option to resolve many common health issues such as chronic or acute structural pain, digestive disturbance, insomnia, headache, PMS, depression and anxiety. Acupuncture, combined with dietary and lifestyle adjustments can also significantly improve your overall state of health. Because it is particularly effective in the management of pain, it can represent a valuable alternative to pain medication including the need for anti-inflammatory medication. In cases where the pain is severe and enduring, it can reduce the amount of pain medication required to provide relief.

The objectives are to:

  • eliminate or reduce pain
  • restore function
  • improve overall state of health
  • support the body’s ability to naturally correct its own imbalances, provides a “tipping point”

Acupuncture needles are very fine, flexible needles, no bigger around than the width of a human hair or piece of thread. The insertion of the needle is very gentle and produces little or no sensation at all. When the needle makes contact with your Chi, you may feel a “Chi” sensation such as warmth, expansion or heaviness. These are good sensations and a sign that the body is responding to the treatment. Most first time patients are surprised how comfortable and relaxed they feel during their treatment.

Your first appointment will take an hour and a half. We will discuss, in detail, your current health concerns and health history. I will also read your tongue and wrist pulses before beginning your treatment. Your return visits will take one hour. Before each treatment we will talk briefly about your progress as well as reading your tongue and pulses. Most patients rest with their needles in for 20-30 minutes.

The tongue and pulses are windows into the state of your overall health. The size, coating and moisture content of your tongue reveal information about your organ systems and their related meridians. (Please do not brush your tongue before a treatment.) Your tongue and pulses combined with your overall presentation and what you tell me create a specific picture of the kind of treatment you need that day.

Each patient is different. Acute problems tend to experience some relief right away while chronic conditions may respond more slowly. Many of the common conditions patients suffer from did not appear overnight.  Often, when the symptoms begin to interfere with daily life is when we seek treatment. Some patients respond favorably after one or two treatments. Some may not experience significant improvement until the third or fourth treatment. Complex cases may require a few treatments per week for several months for maximum results. The key to remember is that these treatments are helping your body restore necessary balance at your pace. I will always refer you to the appropriate health care professional if I don’t think acupuncture is going to provide you with the results you are looking for.

Yes! For your protection, the laws governing acupuncturists require us to follow strict safety measures regarding needles. I use only single use, sterilized needles that are manufactured, packaged and shipped in strict compliance with these laws.
